Buying for someone who works construction, drives a truck or runs a trade is hard. They don't want another novelty mug, and they already own the tools they like. The best gifts make a long, cold, early workday a little easier. Here's a list built around that.
1. Good wool work socks
Cheap, practical and appreciated by every single person who stands on concrete all day. Get a multi-pack.
2. A heated jacket or vest
For anyone who works outside through winter. Battery-heated layers have gotten much better and lighter in the last few years.
3. A hot lunch, anywhere
Most job sites don't have a microwave, so lunch is either cold or a $15 drive-thru. A cordless heated lunch box fixes that: he packs leftovers the night before, sets the timer in the morning, and it turns itself on before his break. No outlet needed. Ours arrives boxed, ready to wrap, with an insulated carry bag, a 1.2L stainless tray and a spoon & fork. The 2-pack ($159, save $19) covers him and a buddy on the crew: keep one, gift one.
One tip to pass on: It heats, it doesn't cool. Pack food cold from the fridge, keep the box in the insulated bag out of the sun, and add an ice pack on hot days.
4. A quality headlamp
For early starts and late finishes in the dark months. Look for a rechargeable one with a red-light mode.
5. Insoles or anti-fatigue inserts
If he's on his feet all day, a good pair of insoles is one of the most-used gifts he'll get.
6. A big insulated bottle
Keeps coffee hot through the morning and water cold through the afternoon.
7. A small rechargeable power bank
Phones die on long shifts. (Bonus: the HotShift lunch box can charge a phone over USB-C in a pinch.)
